Toughnite or Gas Soft Nitriding is a heat treatment process designed to enhance the surface properties of steel components. This is a variation of the traditional nitriding process, which is focused on achieving softer and ductile surface layers. The process includes heating the materials between 500ºC to 550ºC in a gaseous environment. This is followed by diffusing Nitrogen into the surface layer of the steel, followed by controlled cooling. Precise temperature control and gas composition is essential to achieve the desired surface properties such as surface hardness, wear resistance, and toughness.
